Scottsdale Individual and Couples Therapy
There is a wealth of evidence pointing to the importance of the relationship between therapists and their clients. In my clinical practice, I have found this to be a vital factor in the success of my therapeutic approach. That is why I will ask the right questions and always listen carefully to your answers so that I can really understand what life is like for you.
Why Choose Me as Your Therapist?
I am…
-
Experienced
As a qualified social worker since 2000 I worked with adults with mental health problems for over five years then with children and adolescents for another ten. After furthering my training to become a marriage and family therapist, I continued to work with individuals, families and couples in the UK before moving to Arizona in 2019. I have been working as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice for over four years. I have treated hundreds of clients of all ages and backgrounds – couples, families, and individuals. I also trained and worked as schoolteacher and worked for the UK probation service running rehabilitation groups for men convicted of domestic violence.
-
Well Qualified
I have a BS in Psychology from Swansea (in Wales, UK), a Masters degree in Applied Social Sciences and Social Work from Oxford University and a second Masters degree in Systemic Psychotherapy (Family Therapy) from the renowned Tavistock Centre in London. Since moving to Arizona I have taken further training courses and have followed all of the necessary steps (including an additional 1600 hours of clinically supervised sessions with clients and two further exams) to become qualified as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the state of Arizona. I have extensive training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which can help with depression, anger, anxiety, phobias and OCD, and I am qualified to provide Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) which is a proven approach to helping people with severe emotional problems, relationship difficulties and self-harming / suicidal behaviors and urges.
-
Client-focused
Through careful questions and listening, I will always strive to understand why you’ve come to see me, and to think carefully with you about what you hope to gain from therapy. I will avoid imposing my own “solutions” to your “problems”, instead aiming to work alongside you to develop answers and new ways of doing things individually or as a couple that bring about lasting positive changes in your life.
-
Thoughtful
As your therapist, I will put a great deal of thought, care and attention into everything I say and do in therapy with you. I usually make notes and will be constantly reflecting on what is going on for you and between us. I keep myself up to date through reading journals and books and occasionally I will seek supervision from other experienced therapists. Using reading, self-reflection and supervision, I will do everything I can to give you the best of my knowledge and experience at all times.
-
Friendly and Empathic
It is well known in the therapy literature that the therapeutic relationship is the single most important factor in how successful any therapy might be. I make it my number one priority to develop your trust, build your confidence in me, and to demonstrate to you that I am listening and attempting to understand what things are like for you. When working with couples I will always strive to remain neutral and balanced, avoiding taking sides or excluding anyone from being heard.
